Question: Does it hurt your eyes to look at it?

Answer: Yes, it hurts your eyes. I draped a white voile fabric over the top of the lantern to stop the brightness. It lights up the room even at 500 lumens, the third set. The lantern is very high quality, but you certainly cannot look directly at the bulb.

Question: Does it accept rechargeable batteries?

Answer: Yep, sure does and rechargeable D cells are easy to find I use them all the time to power my LED lantern. The Amazon Basics Brand rechargeable D cells are great (I own a set) and their capacity is underrated. Amazon rates them at 10,000 mAh but their actual capacity as determined by a discharge cycle on my smart charger indicates they are around 11,500 mAh!

Question: Where are the batteries in this lantern?

Answer: Have to take the bottom off the lantern. Batteries are under the lantern.

We keep this lantern in our emergency kit at home. When the power went out last week, it lit up the whole living room. Super bright and lasts long on regular batteries.

Took this lantern on a 3-day camping trip and it lit up our whole tent perfectly. Love that it runs on AA batteriesno need to worry about recharging in the wild.

Great lantern. It came with batteries installed, so all I had to do was take it out the box and push the On button. It's brightest setting is exceedingly bright, so I had to avert my eyes and hit the button to change it to a lower setting (there are 4 settings).

I was looking for something that didn't need to be recharged since that isnt possible during power outages. During the spring, summer and fall, we here in Minnesota we frequently have storms that leave us in the dark. I tried out the latern and I was very pleased. I am not a fan of total darkness and this lantern is nice and bright but also has the ability to dim the brightness. I would definitely recommend this product!

Haven't used it enough to comment battery life, but as the picture shows, it's almost blinding bright.
