Why Hokolite Sells Products Via Dropshipping

There are a number of reasons why we have chosen to use dropshipping as our primary method of retail here at Hokolite:

1) Traditional chain retailers are complex and are a high-cost process.

To be honest, owning a traditional business is very complicated.

 

All business companies like Hokolite are order-controlled by big chain retailers such as Home Depot, which buy products directly from us.

 

However, they mostly buy from brands that are local to the US. A local brand importer may place an order to US importers, or they may buy from Hong Kong or Shenzhen traders (Chinese traders). Finally, the order is placed to a Chinese manufacturer.

 

Yes, you read that right! What you buy from big chain retailers may have already been passed through 3-5 companies before eventually ending up in their stores.

Moreover, even companies in the middle receive profits as the product is sent to the next store. The trader, importers, and brand importers also receive profits. This makes things extremely difficult. The cost of a product is very high for all parties involved and does not contribute towards making a healthy market.

 

2) The Traditional Chain Retailer Quality Concept is Faulty

Every time you see our lighting products in different chain retailer stores, did you ever stop yourself and ask yourself,"Why does it cost so much and waste so much on packing?"

 

I have to admit, attractive packaging is an excellent business tactic. This attracts consumers to the products, thinking that they have no other choice but to purchase this product because of its high-quality packaging and styling.

 

However, what if I were to tell you that on some occasions, the packaging may even cost just as much as the lighting. Would it surprise you?

Many have experience in opening PVC clamshell packing using knives. Let me explain the combined cost for this simple tap light product.

 

The tap light itself is worth about 0.5 USD/pc. The PVC clamshell packaging costs about 0.25 USD. But, the story does not end here! Since PVC clamshells are quite large, it will increase shipping costs since big chain retailers usually order 12-18 units (carton boxes).

 

This will increase the pricing by 0.15 USD per carton box. Moreover, the clamshell packaging takes up more space. This will add freight cost by at least 0.12 USD/pc for this tap light product to ship from China port to the US port. This means that the packaging will inevitably cost 0.52 USD/pc just to purchase the tap light. This is higher than the cost of the tap light which was 0.5 USD/pc!

 

Don’t hear this as an attack on this business tactic. I think we all understand that this improves product selling and attracts customers who are astonished by the packaging of the light and how easy it is to apply.

 

However, the US trader/importer is given an extremely tight budget by the market and retail stores which adds unwanted pressure. They themselves know it is impossible to reduce packaging and shipping costs.

 

They then ask us to REDUCE QUALITY STANDARDS for tap lights so they could meet the budget. They will then push you - the consumer - to reduce waste and use recycled plastic.

 

They then use low-quality carbon batteries so they can risk it all to request manufacturers to reduce overcharge or discharge from rechargeable camping lanterns/rechargeable work lights.

 

This action is extremely dangerous. We all remember the story of the infamous Samsung Note 7, don’t we? As manufacturers, we refuse to meet such unreasonable and dangerous demands.

 

However, we cannot promise that every small or new manufacturing company will refuse large orders from these famous retail store chains.

 

To be honest, you will not be the only manufacturing company in the field. If you refuse their request, they will find more than 10 other manufacturers within 24 hours who are willing to reduce quality and put their consumer’s lives on the line just to make a quick buck.

 

We have reason to believe that these famous retail chain stores know nothing about this since it is their own OEM. They will believe the product they received is nothing less than high quality.

 

So, before hiring from traders and importers, first, consider their business ethics and if they value quality over quantity and money. If you do not, you risk the safety of everyone who purchases that product in particular.

 

Most buyers will purchase high-quality-budget products, and this usually results in limited traditional business and helps consumers focus on the packaging and pricing of a product.
