Answers: No, you just need to press the switch button to switch it off.

Questions: How do you get to the battery compartment?

Answers: The bottom screws off. There is a spline you have to align with a groove in order to screw it back on after installing the batteries. Very simple to drop in the batteries.

Questions: Can I use this camping lantern underwater for short intervals of time?

Answers: Not recommended for underwater usage. If should fall into the water retrieve it immediately. The unit does have seals for a wet environment. But not designed for totally submerged usage. Can be used in the rain and for emergency use.
